Toilet training cats – sounds weird and difficult doesn’t it?
It is possible though. You need to stay committed to the cause and have a lot of time and patience for it to be a success. It is a similar exercise as if you were doing the same with a child. Make sure that the cat has been trained in both outdoor and litter box toiletry skills before undertaking this task.
Step one is to transfer the cats litter box to the bathroom. Once it is there, move it to the side of the w. C. Raise it up gradually until it is about the same height as the w. C. Ensure that the structure is rigid as you don’t want it to fall over when the cat jumps on it.
The second step is to put a training seat onto your normal toilet and place a small amount of cat litter inside the training seat. As soon as the cat has got used to this, cut a small hole in the middle of the seat gradually making it larger until eventually totally open. As soon as you have done this, the cat should be used to using the toilet so you will no longer need the training seat.
The one thing to remember about toiler training cats, however, is that your cat will not have the ability to flush the toilet after use – you have to do it. If you have got more than one toilet/bathroom in your home, make a specific one the one for the training to be carried out. You might want to put a sign on the door that says ‘cat toilet training in progress’ to remind others in the house (particularly the children and/or elderly relatives) not to use it themselves and place the lid down after use. This will only confuse your cat.
There are some advantages, however, to training your cat to use the toilet – not least there will be fewer smells from litter boxes in the house. You wont need to get rid of the used litter trays which is good for environmental reasons and you will also save bundles of cash not having to buy litter in the future.
So although you will not need a huge number of supplies or appliances when toilet training cats, what you will need in abundance is patience, patience – and more patience.
